Rethinking What Education Is For
Artificial Intelligence Has Not Changed the Purpose of Education; It Has Revealed It
For the greater part of human history, education was the vehicle for distributing what was scarce: knowledge. The teacher knew; the student learned. Books were limited, experts were difficult to access, and knowledge itself was a precious resource. Today, for the first time, humanity faces the exact opposite problem. Knowledge is no longer scarce. Artificial intelligence can summarise millions of sources in seconds, write software, produce text, and answer questions with fluency. If knowledge is no longer scarce, what, then, is education for?
My contention is this: artificial intelligence has not changed the purpose of education; it has merely made it visible. The true role of education was never merely the transmission of information. Its deeper purpose was to equip human beings with the mental tools needed to establish a reliable relationship with reality. Logic, critical thinking, the scientific method, probabilistic reasoning, and ethical judgement. These should not be treated as "subsidiary subjects", but as the very foundation of all education.
This idea is not new. Socrates emphasised asking better questions rather than rote memorisation. Aristotle argued that reason and character must develop in tandem. The Stoics remind us to govern our judgements. Karl Popper demonstrated that science progresses through falsifiability. John Dewey maintained that genuine understanding does not arise from the passive reception of information, but through experience and inquiry. Daniel Kahneman's work demonstrates how easily our minds can err, turning rigorous reasoning skills from a luxury into a necessity. Even Asimov's fiction serves as an indirect guide here, as his stories are built far more on human responsibility than on technology.
The rise of large language models is more than just a technological advance. It represents a fundamental shift in humanity's cognitive environment. For the first time, many routine intellectual tasks can be delegated to machines. This should not diminish the value of human thought; rather, it should prompt us to question which forms of thinking are truly worth preserving. Perhaps the greatest challenge facing education is no longer teaching students what to think, but teaching them how to think in a world where information is limitless, certainty is rare, and persuasive illusions can easily pass for truth.
Future education systems must judge students not by how much information they can recall, but by their ability to distinguish evidence from opinion, identify flaws in reasoning, revise their beliefs in light of new evidence, and uphold intellectual integrity. Artificial intelligence has not rendered human intelligence obsolete. On the contrary, it has revealed that human judgement is more valuable than ever. In this new era, the education systems that thrive will not be those that produce the most information, but those that cultivate people who know how to reach the truth.
